In recent years, exporting opportunities of Vietnamese banana has sharply been increasing. Rather than just depend on the main market as China, Vietnam has received a series of import orders from South Korea, Japan, Eurozone, Russia, Qatar… At the busiest time, enterprises of Vietnamese banana export hundreds of tonnes of banana per day.

According to Mr. Vo Quan Huy, director of an big export company of banana from Vietnam, Japan’s total fruit consumption is estimated at 5.4 million tonnes per year. Of which, Japan imports 1.8 million tonnes from foreign companies.

Banana dominates a large percentage of Japan’s import fruit market with annual volume of more than one million tonnes. Next is pineapple with volume of 200,000 tonnes per year. In fact, banana and pineapple account for 65% of all fruits imported into Japan.

Philippines is now the leading exporter of green banana to Japan with 85% of market share. However, Vietnamese banana is standing ahead many export opportunities to dominate the Japanese market. The reason is that Japanese importers wish to diversify suppliers from many countries.

On the one hand, Vietnamese banana is highly appreciated for its sweet tastes. On the other, Vietnamese banana is suitable with the taste of Japanese consumers and cheaper than those of Philippines. Especially, if banana could penetrate into Japanese market – a market with high requirements for quality of imported products, it can penetrate into other markets easily.

The evidence is that Mr. Huy’s Vietnamese banana has continuously received positive attentions from Japanese market. Some Japanese businesses went to Mr Huy’s banana farm to get samples for testing. By April, 2016, Mr. Huy’s banana met up to 200 chemical parameters, cultivating criteria and conquered this toughest market in the world.

Every day, Mr. Huy’s company exports to Japan from 15 to 20 tonnes of green banana. Don Kihote supermarket chain is sellingVietnamese banana in more than 10 retail locations in Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba… Beside Japanese market, the company also exports to China and Malaysia. Currently, the company is negotiating to sell Vietnamese banana to South Korea.

Similarly, Mr. Le Sy Cong, Director of another export company of banana from Vietnam said: “In 2016, we exported nearly 500 tonns of Laba banana to Japanese market. Currently, my company does not have enough banana to export”.

According to Mr. Cong, the opportunities to export green banana from Vietnam has never been as wide as ever. Beside Japan, other markets such as England, Russia, Ukraine… also love Laba banana. Laba is a special kind of banana planting in Lam Dong province with special clammy and fragrant taste.
