1. What is HDF?
High density fiberboard (HDF) is wood based panel consists of wood fibers (or wood flour) made from softwood and hardwood, adhesive and some other components pressed under high temperature and pressure.
2. History and development
In 1898, a kind of board similar to HDF made of heat-press scrap paper appeared in the UK.
In the 1990s, a low-density fiberboard used in construction industry was made in Canada.
In the early 1920s, people improved technology of pressing wet woodflour under high-temperature and pressure and produced higher density fiberboard.
3. Components of HDF boards
Similar to MDF boards, HDF boards are composed of wood fibers (or wood flour), adhesive and other components (paraffins, hardeners …).
4. Physical Characteristics and General Features
HDF has the color of wood (yellow, brown).
Average density of HDF is 800 – 1040 kg/m3.
Due to the high density, HDF is quite heavy.
5. The manufacturing process of HDF boards
HDF is produced by pressing small wood fibers under high pressure and temperature with the participation of adhesives and other components.
Similar to MDF boards, HDF boards are also manufactured by using dry technology and wet technology.
6. Advantages
HDF board has high hardness and mechanical durability.
Having ability to resist moisture and scratches.
Sound and heat insulation of HDF is very high.
HDF wood has a smooth and homogeneous surface that can easily be painted or laminated with decorative surfaces such as veneer, acrylic, melamine, laminate and so on.
The load capacity of HDF is very good.
7. Application
Thanks to its high load capacity and good scratch resistance, HDF boards are often used for flooring panel or stairs panel.
Similar to MDF, HDF are often pressed onto decorative surfaces are often pressed on HDF for interior production and decoration.
HDF can also be used for outdoor furniture.
