1. Definition of Acrylic

An acrylic sheet is a decorative surface used for furnishing industry. This sheet is pressed on wood based panels. Its siencetific name is PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate) – a plastic derived from refined petroleum.

2. History and development

This material was developed in 1982 in labotories by chemistricians: William Chalmer, Otto Rohm and Walter Bauer. In 1933, Acrylic emerged in wood-based panels market by Rohm and Haas Company under the brandname Plexiglas.

3. Physical characteristics and features

The acrylic panel is translucent, hard and elastic.
Specific weight: 1,18 g/cm3.
A 3mm-thick acrylic enables 98% normal light goes through.
Acrylic’s melting temperature is 160 degree C (about 4330 degree K; 3200 degree F).

4. Advantages

– Lightweight, easy to apply
– Due to its plasticity, acrylic is easy to cut, bend, press … as desired..

5. Disadvantages

– Relatively high price compared with other industrial materials
– The surface is easy to scratch
– Processing machine needs high accuracy
– Uncoordinated with classical designs

6. Application

In the furniture industry, Acrylic is often applied on the surface of other materials such as MDF or HDF panels for use in the manufacture of furniture such as beds, cabinets, wardrobes, TV racks, doors, etc.
